Please, Spare the Air
and don't burn wood this winter season!
Residents are asked this winter to
give up wood fires in stoves and fireplaces to limit smoke on
dirty-air nights. Cold air can trap pollution close to the
ground so one fire in one old-fashioned fire place can smoke up
an entire neighborhood. The air district says the cleanest way
to enjoy fires on cold nights is in popular modern fireplaces
that use natural gas to heat ceramic logs. Some people will
continue to burn wood. For those who do, the air district
recommends EPA-approved stoves, fire boxes and fireplace
inserts. These devices emit a fraction of the pollution spewed
out by old wood stoves and traditional open hearth fireplaces.
It has also been
noticed by the distinctive smell that someone in the
neighborhood recently burned plastic or similar material.
Not only is this against the law, it is also toxic and
extremely harmful to you, your family and others in your
neighborhood. These toxins can also foul your catalytic
combustor and flue. Therefore, never burn garbage, plastics,
rubber, paint or oil, charcoal briquettes, glossy or colored
paper, etc.

Poll: Support for change
of Traffic Light at Chambertin/Blossom Hill
The
results of the AWNA poll are in.
BACKGROUND:
There is a desire to change the traffic light at the Chambertin
Drive and Blossom Hill Road intersection. The Almaden Winery
Neighborhood Association is seeking the right to go straight
(heading north) through the intersection, which currently only
allows right or left turns. You can read more about this topic
in the latest AWNA Newsletter or further below on this page and
in the Archive.
|
CHOICES
AND RESULTS:
-
Yes,
I support it got 33 votes or 91%
-
No,
I don't support it got 2 votes or 6%
-

The poll was open from September 5th through 30th, 2006.

AWNA - Traffic Signal at
Intersection of Chambertin/Blossom Hill
Update on Traffic
Light - Blossom Hill and Chambertin
Dear
Neighbors,
We
received an update from our Stephanie Holm, District 10
Councilmember's Office on the traffic light situation. Here is
the latest status:
Mike Enderby from planning is
investigating the details of all planning documents relating to
the light. He should have an answer to the questions raised at
the last AWNA meeting within the next few weeks. After planning
has determined exactly which planning documents must be filed,
how much they will cost, etc. he will report back to President
of the Almaden Winery Neighborhood Association. You will see
updates her on the website. So, stay tuned!
Next there will be a large
community forum with the offices of Council District 9 and 10
(10 is our district), the planning department, the residents who
live North of Blossom Hill, and Dartmouth Middle School. At that
time, all residents will have an opportunity to speak their mind
about the light. If there is not a huge outcry from the
residents of Council District 9 or Dartmouth Middle school,
planning will approve the change to the light. AWNA will still
be responsible for paying for the change. It is expected that
the community meeting will occur sometime in early November.
This is now
important: We will need as many AWNA residents as possible
to attend the meeting and show support for changing the light!
Note: The date for this meeting
has not yet been set. Once the planning documents are
approved, it shouldn't take long to change the light. The
District 10 office pledged to make every effort to expedite the
planning approval process.

AWNA - Traffic Signal at
Intersection of Chambertin/Blossom Hill
Update: We
will discuss this topic at our next AWNA Meeting on September 6,
see above!
Dear
Neighbors,
The
District 10 office has been working with Planning, Public Works,
and the Department of Transportation (DOT) regarding the traffic
signal at the intersection of Chambertin Drive and Blossom Hill
Road. As a reminder, the Almaden Winery Community has been
seeking to go straight (heading north) through the intersection,
which currently only allows right or left turns.
Feedback
from Public Works and the DOT have let us know that both
departments are comfortable with the modification being proposed
by AWNA if:
-
the
required striping, signing, and signal head modifications
are funded by AWNA,
-
a
community process is executed which outlines the proposal,
and
-
the
City can obtain consensus from the adjacent communities.
On a
procedural level, the AWNA must file a Planned Development
Permit Amendment to remove the restriction. The person to
contact in order to begin this process is:
Michael
Enderby,
Senior
Planner
(408) 535-3555
(direct line),
(408) 292-6055
(fax)
Email:

He will
help AWNA with this process, should we choose to move forward.
In addition, please feel free to contact the new District 10
staff member Stephanie Holm (stephanie.holm[at]anjoseca[dot]gov
or (408) 535-4982) if additional assistance is required. She
will be the new liaison to AWNA.

CAUTION:
Mail theft is still a problem in our Neighborhood!
Recently S.J. Police
found mail on the sidewalk of Dent Street that belonged to a
neighbor in the Tresor community. The envelopes were ripped
open and in some cases the envelope was left, and the
contents were gone.
Tresor Residents, just a quick reminder to always
lock your mailbox. Make it a habit to lock it after you picked up
your mail. I have seen some mailboxes that appear never
to be locked. You can see this very easily by the position
of the key slot. I'm sure the thieves know this also.
Be vigilant and report suspicious
activities by strangers around our mailboxes immediately to the
Police by calling 911. |

It's time for
another Neighborhood Watch
It has been several years since we
had the City of San Jose present to us on Neighborhood Watch - a
program whose goal is to promote safety awareness in our
communities. With the ongoing turnover in our neighborhood, it
is time to do this again and to provide newer homeowners the
awareness training to help keep their homes and our neighborhood
safe. If you have participated in the program before, this
provides an excellent opportunity for a refresher. To keep
our neighborhood and park safe, it requires the ongoing
involvement and safety awareness of all homeowners. The
AWNA is seeking an individual to help coordinate this activity
with the City and set up the community meeting. The time
commitment is small but the rewards are great in providing this
valuable service for our neighborhood.
If you are interested in coordinating this, contact Michael
Kubiniec at
