August 28, 2004
- AWNA Community Picnic Back On
The community picnic
previously scheduled for June 26th was canceled due to a
lack of volunteers to help plan the event. Several members
from our community have stepped forward to help plan the
event - so it is back on!
The new date is August 28th from 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
Location - Almaden Winery Park
Planned activities/events
include:
-
a jump house with a
slide
-
swimming pools in the
park (2 blow up type, 1 small and 1 large)
-
sprinkler spray
activities
-
a DJ
-
San Jose Mounted Police
-
a fire truck on display
-
various games for
children are being organized
-
a grill will be rented
-
this will be a potluck:
bring your own grill item and something to share (more
details to follow on the something to share item)
-
display board for the
new Youth Lot
-
raffle for the Youth Lot
project...
... and more!
But - we do need a "little
more help" from the community. Volunteers are needed on the
day of the event for helping to set up tables and chairs,
cleanup, etc. So, if you can spare 30 minutes, or an hour or
two on just the day of the event - Aug 28th- please
volunteer! Again - just on the day of the event - no other
commitment is required. If you can help, contact
Nancy Sakal.
Also, we are looking for a
"Head Chef" to assist in grilling duties. Contact
Nancy as well.
More details will follow.
So, be on the lookout for these here on the AWNA Website and
in the July newsletter and flyers in August. This
community-wide picnic is open for all families located
within the 3 developments at the Almaden Winery. I look
forward to seeing you all there! Be sure to tell your
neighbors.
Finally, this event will
not be open for display tables for people promoting their
business interests. This is a commercial-free event!

- House Decorating Contest
The results are in for the Annual Almaden Winery Holiday
House Decorating Contest and we have a winner - actually two winners! This
year, we have a tie and the winners are:
Gary Chiotti - 1505 Touraine Drive
Michael Tyler - 1512 Touraine Drive
Both Gary and Michael have been winners in previous years
and they battled it out once again this year. They engaged in holiday light
proliferation and escalation as they each eyed each other's display from across
the street. As one increased with yet another string of lights, the other
matched and exceeded the other. Go and see for yourself!
The judging committee had a very difficult job determining
the winner with votes split down the middle! Therefore, both Gary and Michael
each earned a $50 cash prize. They will also pass the winner's sign back and
forth to each other over the next several weeks. Detente has settled in!
Well done to Gary and Michael!
They have certainly raised the bar for holiday spirit in our neighborhood. For
those not selected, better luck next year! Next year, we may include another
category of indoor decorations as seen from the street. Many homes offered a
wonderful display and are a terrific sight to see.
The best decorated street was Bordelais Drive. Well done
and thank you for all those that participated.
This year's judging committee consisted of: Joe and
Cathy Cassetta, Bryan and Shelly Shisler, Jay and Anne Gabany, Jim Graham (his
wife Carmella had to stay at home sick!) and Mike and Michele Kubiniec. The
judges had to endure the cold and drizzling rain as they walked through the
neighborhood, but it was worth it!
